911 Dispatchers: The First First Responders
Was that a typo in the title – First First Responders? No, not at all. We’ve gone to several events now where we have had the opportunity to get to personally thank some 911 dispatchers for their services to the community and it was only in getting to talk with them that I learned they aren’t typically considered a “First Responder”. That titling usually refers to professionals who are the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency. This includes police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who are trained to respond to and handle emergency situations. Yet, our 911 dispatchers play a crucial role in emergency response as they answer emergency calls, assess the situation, provide pre-arrival instructions (like CPR guidance), and dispatch the appropriate first responders.
This month, while providing dinner to the citizens involved in the Scottsdale Citizen Academy, we had the unbelievable privilege of getting to take a quick tour of the Scottsdale Police Department dispatch center. I can not express to you my personal awe of the amount of knowledge dispatchers have to have with technology – they each had 6 screens worth of information that they were overseeing at any given time! (See picture that I borrowed from Scottsdale PD Facebook page.) There ability to keep calm and do this overly stressful job day after day is something that we should all appreciate.
So, while not typically considered among our First Responders, sometimes our 911 dispatchers get the title of First First Responders. So, from the T.A.C.T. aka The Last Responders, thank you for your service day after day!
