The Difference Between ‘Remediation’ & ‘Clean Up’

The terms "remediation" and "clean-up" may seem similar, but they have distinct meanings, especially in insurance claims and biohazard situations.

Clean-up refers to the basic removal of debris, dirt, or contaminants from an area. This can be performed by general cleaning crews or homeowners and typically does not involve specialized procedures.

Remediation is a specialized process that involves identifying, containing, and neutralizing hazardous materials such as mold, sewage, chemical spills, or biohazards (e.g., crime scenes, unattended deaths). It requires professional expertise, certified equipment, and compliance with safety regulations.

Clean Up on the Rise

Since the approval of Proposition 312 in November of 2024, we have had an increase in requests for assistance in cleaning up homeless encampments throughout the Valley.  With that, we are often asked if we think it’s really helping. Our perspective is a little different than most, as we aren’t looking at it from the standpoint of fixing the homelessness issue but on keeping the community at large safe.  When we go in to do the remediation of encampments, we often find used needles, buckets of human waste and other hazards.  By going in and clearing out these sites we are removing those exposures from the community to keep everyone healthy.  So yes, we do feel we are helping, just in a compacity that most can’t.

Who Pays for Your Services?

This is one of our most asked question.  Most people don’t realize that if it’s a biohazardous situation, typically property insurance policies will pay for our services.  Additionally, there are municipalities throughout the Valley that, as part of their mission to keep the community safe, contract with us to assist when there is a circumstance that needs remediation in a public area.  Finally, there are cases wherein an individual pays directly (we even offer financing if needed).  We can always provide a free, written estimate of services before any work is started.
